Could you Leave a Legacy of Hope that will impact generations of people for years to come?

Leave a Legacy of Hope

Thank you for considering leaving a gift to us in your Will. Leaving a legacy to Health and Hope UK is a wonderful way of ensuring your support for the rural poor in western Myanmar can live on, transforming individuals and their communities for generations to come through our health, education, food security and livelihood programmes. We believe that this is not just a financial gift, but a gift of trust; one which we truly value. Without your support, our work would not be possible.

How your gift will make a difference:

  • Your gift will enable improved access to primary health care in remote rural areas.
  • Your gift will have an impact for a lifetime…many of the students taking part in the Freedom to Education Programme actively contribute towards long-term socio-economic development in Myanmar, often returning to serve their communities.
  • Your gift will enable the implementation of sustainable development initiatives, including livelihood support and conservation agriculture.
  • Your gift will help us respond in times of crisis, providing food, shelter and emergency support at times of insecurity and conflict.

Chewa's story

Chewa (name changed) who is a graduate of the Freedom to Education Programme and is now part of our health team says:

I was born in Lailenpi, Chin State, Myanmar. I have three younger sisters and two younger brothers. I am the eldest daughter in our family. My father is a school teacher and retired now, and my mother is a house-wife.

I attended the school in Lailenpi from Year 1 until Year  10, and I passed my Matriculation exam in 2012. It was not easy for me to continue my college course since my father’s salary was the only income in our family. My mother worked in a field and looked after us. My father was mostly posted to other villages and he could only come to see us once a year. It was very difficult for me to concentrate on my lessons sometimes. Every time my mother went to the field, I had to look after my siblings for the whole day.

When I was in Year 5, one of my beloved grandfathers passed away with a curable illness. I was so helpless and cried so much. At that time, there was no trained doctor in our place to treat him. My father said at the time, “If there was a doctor he would not have left us so early.” One of my cousins also passed away from malaria when I was in Year 4. On another occasion a friend of mine died from malaria, aged 13. Losing loved ones was really hard to accept; they were my first experiences of losing people close to me. These were the reasons that made me want to become a doctor in the hope that I would be able to  help patients.

Today, I am able to help many of the people I love. To have this opportunity is one of the greatest things that has happened to me. Having this opportunity of helping people who need us makes me proud and happy, and it is all by the grace of God.

How do I leave a gift in my Will to Health & Hope?

A Will is one of the most important documents you will ever write because it ensures that your estate goes to the people and causes you care about. Writing a Will is usually a quick, simple and inexpensive process that ensures your wishes are understood. We recommend that you consult your solicitor who will advise you on how to create or amend your Will. They can also  provide information about the positive effects that leaving a donation in your Will can have on the inheritance tax on your estate.

We are thankful for every gift, regardless of size. Leaving a gift to the general use of Health and Hope UK is extremely helpful to us as the gift can be utilised wherever the need is greatest. Your gift will ensure that our programmes can continue to bring health and hope to the rural poor of western Myanmar – from the smallest child to whole communities – for generations to come.

Doris's Story

Doris Windebank was born in 1927 in Orpington, Kent. Throughout her life Doris, who had been horribly scarred in a bomb-blast during World War II, had been actively involved in childrens’ work in the church through Sunday School and the youth club.

Before she passed away in 2019, she appointed Phil and Val Beckwith to be Executors of her Estate. Phil and Val, long-standing supporters of Health & Hope, had known Doris through church since they were both 15 and had developed a very close bond with her, becoming like family to Doris who had never married or had children and had tragically been rejected by her family.

When Doris instructed that Phil and Val to choose charities to leave a gift in her Will that had a focus on children or education, they chose, amongst other charities, Health & Hope on her behalf to receive a generous gift from Doris’s estate. This legacy was specified to go towards our education work.

For Doris’s generosity and the Beckwiths who chose us we are truly thankful.
