Devastating Earthquake hits Myanmar
A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on 28 March 2025, with more than 3,000 people confirmed dead so far. he full extent of the disaster is still unknown, but this figure is likely to rise as more information become available from rural and more inaccessible areas.
Despite the request for assistance, it is likely that humanitarian access will be heavily controlled and limited to areas of priority identified only by the military.
A state of emergency has been declared in six regions, with the military junta requesting humanitarian assistance, while simultaneously bombing their own citizens in affected areas in continued airstrikes.
Response
Health & Hope have mobilised an emergency relief team to work with local partners to deliver crucial assistance to affected areas. Partnering with local organisations is a quick and effective way to provide emergency support. These groups are deeply rooted in their communities, have a strong understanding of the local context, and are well-connected within existing operational networks to facilitate emergency response efforts.
The earthquake has caused widespread destruction of homes and severe damage to critical infrastructure. While search and rescue efforts continue, many are still trapped under fallen buildings.
What we are doing
-
Providing of emergency medical care for the injured
-
Ensuring safe shelter for families
-
Supplying clean water, food, and essential services
-
Supporting the reconstruction of homes and rehabilitation of livelihoods
It is likely that much international humanitarian support will be focused (also rightly) in and around Mandalay, with less attention able to be given to Sagaing and the more rural, inaccessible areas in this region.
Please donate today to support our emergency appeal.
Thank you.
